Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
